Maryna Cherkashyna-Hubarenko is a Ukrainian musicologist, music critic, educator, librettist. PhD in Art History, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (2017). Founder and chairman of the Kyiv Wagner Society. Author of numerous scientific works, mainly in the field of musical theatre.
She was born into the family of theatre artists Roman Cherkashyn and Yuliya Fomina, who were involved with Les Kurbas's Berezil Theatre. After graduating from the Kharkiv Conservatoire in 1962, she continued her education at the Moscow Conservatoire, where she studied with B. Yarustovsky and completed her postgraduate studies in 1970.
Between 1964 and 1985, she lectured at the Kharkiv State Conservatory (I. P. Kotliarevsky Institute of Arts), working as an associate professor from 1973 and as the head of the Department of Music History from 1979. Since 1985, she has been a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory (Tchaikovsky National Music Academy), where she headed the Department of Music History in 1985, the Department of Foreign Music History in 1999-2015, and the Department of Opera Performance in 2017-2018.
Maryna Cherkashyna-Hubarenko holds a PhD in Art History with a thesis "Modern Musical and Psychological Drama: Selected Tendencies in the Development of the Genre" (1972) and a PhD in Art History with a thesis "Historical Opera of the First Half of the 19th Century: Challenges of Interpreting History. The Fate of the Genre" (1985). She is also a member of the Union of Composers of the USSR and the Union of Composers of Ukraine.
